A GPS Dog Tracker for Little Escape Artists

Marly is an escape artist who sees the open front door of their house as the perfect invitation to go exploring. Even though Marly wears a small dog collar with an ID tag, when she sprints out the door, catching her is challenging. Her owner, Geena, worries that the next time Marly runs off, she will not be able to reach her dog before something bad happens or Marly simply goes missing.

Patty recently contacted us about her son's little dog, Franky, whom she described as "...a runner". She was desperately searching for a small dog collar that would keep track of Franky before he runs off again. Franky has a microchip, but it proved useless the last time Franky got out of the back yard. He never made it to the vet's office where the staff could reconnect Franky with Patty. A neighbor found Franky a few days after he ran off, scratched up and dehydrated.

For Geena and Patty, keeping track of their little escape artists is a huge source of concern. They both know that their dogs will seize upon a door or gate left open as an invitation for adventure. What options do pet parents have beyond the limited effectiveness of the ID tag or microchip? The introduction of smart collars and GPS pet tracking is finally alleviating some of that worry.

Trackers for larger dogs have been available for a few years, but small dogs and cats remain underserved. The chips are finally small enough to enable development of smart collar technology for smaller animals. Companies developing tracking for small dogs include Scollar, Fi, Findster, Tractive, and Whistle

A smart collar, like a human wearable, helps a pet owner take care of their dog or cat. A smart collar tracks a lost pet and records where they have gone over the course of time. This helps locate the dog when they run off in the future. A smart collar monitors a pet's vital signs, sending alerts to the pet parent's smart phone when alarming changes in activities or temperatures occur.

Smart collars help pet parents locate and monitor their pets.  The next generation of smart collars includes daily routine set up, advanced pet sharing, opening doors & feeders, integrating with invisible fences, alerts about flea outbreaks, and personalized product suggestions, like more nutritious food options, with in-app buying and home delivery. Smart, indeed!
